About Us

The Fellowship for Interpretation of  
genomes (FIG) is a non-profit  
organization focusing on the  
development and support of the  
computational infrastructure needed  
to interpret and annotate genomes.

2003
- Founding Fellows Overbeek, Vonstein, Fonstein, Osterman and Kogan incorporate the Fellowship for Interpretation of Genomes
- The SEED comparative genomics and annotation environment is created
- First Subsystems are built, introducing the "Subsystems approach to genome annotation"

2004
- Award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to participate in the development of the National Microbial Pathogen Data
Resource (NMPDR)
- The Project to Annotate 1000 Genomes is launched

2006
- RAST (Rapid Annotation using Subsystem Technology) server is deployed

2009
- RAST becomes the annotation engine for the Pathosystems Resource Integration Center (PATRIC) and FIG joins the PATRIC
team
